Summary

The Laconian Empire has fallen, setting the thirteen hundred solar systems free from the rule of Winston Duarte。 But the ancient enemy that killed the gate builders is awake, and the war against our universe has begun again。

In the dead system of Adro, Elvi Okoye leads a desperate scientific mission to understand what the gate builders were and what destroyed them, even if it means compromising herself and the half-alien children who bear the weight of her investigation。 Through the wide-flung systems of humanity, Colonel Aliana Tanaka hunts for Duarte’s missing daughter。 。 。 and the shattered emperor himself。 And on the Rocinante, James Holden and his crew struggle to build a future for humanity out of the shards and ruins of all that has come before。

As nearly unimaginable forces prepare to annihilate all human life, Holden and a group of unlikely allies discover a last, desperate chance to unite all of humanity, with the promise of a vast galactic civilization free from wars, factions, lies, and secrets if they win。

But the price of victory may be worse than the cost of defeat。

I will say this, whilst I wouldnt say it blew me away, it was a very satisfactory ending and my god I have read some stinkers over the years。

I love this series and in many ways this is a fitting ending。 The core themes all get nicely resolved and, whilst I don't like the way it ended for all the characters, it did feel appropriate and so I'm satisfied。A word of warning。 I am fine with sci-fi techno babble - in fact I quite enjoy it - but this was extreme even for me in places。 If you don't like that sort of thing, reading this (especially the first third) will be a challenge。 I love this series and in many ways this is a fitting ending。 The core themes all get nicely resolved and, whilst I don't like the way it ended for all the characters, it did feel appropriate and so I'm satisfied。A word of warning。 I am fine with sci-fi techno babble - in fact I quite enjoy it - but this was extreme even for me in places。 If you don't like that sort of thing, reading this (especially the first third) will be a challenge。 。。。more

Not much can be said without spoilers however this was an excellent end to the series and bookends the themes wonderfully。

Best book in the series after the first one, with a reasonably satisfying payoff for such a long series。 Highly recommend The Expanse, an enjoyable romp which executes the “super advanced aliens faced an existential threat, lost, and now humanity must deal with it” troupe very well。 The 9 books and handful of novellas are very light reading, and I’ve enjoyed using them to take a breather between heavier titles。

Satisfying conclusion to an epic series。

The end of the series。 It's been going downhill since book four。 This one feels obligatory at this point。 Loved the early books in the series, but these feel unnecessary。 The end of the series。 It's been going downhill since book four。 This one feels obligatory at this point。 Loved the early books in the series, but these feel unnecessary。 。。。more

Previous books in this series have managed to wrest insightful things from scenarios of day-to-day operational mundanity。 This final book did not。 It was, disappointingly, pretty slow and boring。

Having put the book down less than 3 seconds ago; I cannot quite process the words I need to articulate my feelings。 I'm left with the overwhelming sensation that I should be reaching for the next installment, and find myself almost giddy with excitement to continue a story that has now concluded。 Please read this book, this series, please invest yourself as I have。 You will not be disappointed。 Having put the book down less than 3 seconds ago; I cannot quite process the words I need to articulate my feelings。 I'm left with the overwhelming sensation that I should be reaching for the next installment, and find myself almost giddy with excitement to continue a story that has now concluded。 Please read this book, this series, please invest yourself as I have。 You will not be disappointed。 。。。more

The Expanse is one of my favourite series ever and it absolutely sticks the landing with this entry。 What a ride。 Ugh… I’m gonna miss not having new entries in this series to look forward to。

Nine books in total and I wish there were more。 The Expanse series has been a pleasure to read and I will miss the crew of the Rocinante。 The last book in the series delivered on all fronts and while I was sad the journey was over, I was satisfied。 Thank you James S。 A。 Corey for the taking me on such a ride!

This is an effective conclusion to the Expanse, nothing mind-blowing, but it is satisfying。

The final book in my favorite Sci-Fi series, Leviathan Falls did not dissapoint! This series takes the characters through decades of their lives and follows how they face a vast and changing universe。 It is a story about the people, the constant fight for power among different groups of people (whether country, planet, universe, or species), and ultimately what makes us human。 Such a fantactic series and as I have said before, I am sad to see it come to an end。 Highly recommend these books, even The final book in my favorite Sci-Fi series, Leviathan Falls did not dissapoint! Nine massive books, with some pretty big events covered from start to finish。 Trying to finish this series satisfactorily was going to be challenge for any writer, but these guys pulled it off。Somehow staying true to the themes of cooperation vs。 greed that has driven the entire narrative, and although leaning deeper into the more speculative science compared to the rigorous 'hard sci fi' of it's beginnings, it none-the-less never lets up in it's narrative promise to make things difficult for it Nine massive books, with some pretty big events covered from start to finish。 Trying to finish this series satisfactorily was going to be challenge for any writer, but these guys pulled it off。Somehow staying true to the themes of cooperation vs。 greed that has driven the entire narrative, and although leaning deeper into the more speculative science compared to the rigorous 'hard sci fi' of it's beginnings, it none-the-less never lets up in it's narrative promise to make things difficult for it's characters。A natural place for these stories and characters to end。 。。。more

A fantastic finale to an epic series。 I loved that the characters behaved according their preestablished nature, and there weren't any out of character "gotcha" twists; yet at the same time, I was captivated and surprised the whole way!A fitting farewell to all the characters we've come to love over 9 books, and plenty of bitter-sweet moments too。 A fantastic finale to an epic series。 I loved that the characters behaved according their preestablished nature, and there weren't any out of character "gotcha" twists; yet at the same time, I was captivated and surprised the whole way!A fitting farewell to all the characters we've come to love over 9 books, and plenty of bitter-sweet moments too。 。。。more

May not be a perfect ending (I don't know what a perfect ending would be), but it's as good an ending to this nine-part series as one could have hoped for。 Great ending to a great series。 May not be a perfect ending (I don't know what a perfect ending would be), but it's as good an ending to this nine-part series as one could have hoped for。 Great ending to a great series。 。。。more

Read this final installment slowly because I didn’t want to finish the series: “God whispering the obscenity that ends worlds。” Hard and sad to say goodbye to my space family。 A fitting end to arguably the best hard sci-fi series of our time。 Wild that a series this epic actually still ends up being quite tense on how things would go, even though we kind of know all the beats - all the way to the end - identity, loss, vulnerability, fatigue, connection, hope, free will, love, the toll of epic st Read this final installment slowly because I didn’t want to finish the series: “God whispering the obscenity that ends worlds。” Hard and sad to say goodbye to my space family。 A fitting end to arguably the best hard sci-fi series of our time。 Wild that a series this epic actually still ends up being quite tense on how things would go, even though we kind of know all the beats - all the way to the end - identity, loss, vulnerability, fatigue, connection, hope, free will, love, the toll of epic struggle… so much to tie up neatly! I finished The Expanse "space opera" last night。 What a ride! Reminiscing where this opera has taken me through the 9 books, it feels like remembering real people and places。 Earth, Mars, Belters, The OPA, Fred, Amos, Bobbie, Clarissa, James, and Naomi。Wars, intrigues, humanity expanding, and always in the background; the protomolecule lurks。Yup, this was/is a great space opera。 I finished The Expanse "space opera" last night。 What a ride!
